Question:

How to set the proper audio settings on a Blu-ray player when using an external amplifier

Answer:

When using a home theater system or other external amplifier, the proper audio settings on the Blu-ray Player depend on whether the external system is Dolby Digitial capable. An improper setting can result in either no audio or loud noise.

  • If your system supports Dolby Digital, MPEG-2, or DTS audio, the output setting should be Bitstream.
  • If your system does not support Dolby Digital, MPEG-2, or DTS audio, the output setting should be PCM.

To change the audio settings:

  1. With the unit in Stop mode, press the MENU button.
  2. Use the up and down arrow buttons to select Setup, then press the ENTER button.
  3. Use the up and down arrow buttonsn to select Audio Setup, then press the ENTER button.
Audio setup menu will be displayed.
  4. Use the up and down arrow buttons to select DIGITAL OUTPUT then press the ENTER button
  5. Use the up and down arrow buttons to select the desired Audio Option from the options described below then press the ENTER button.

Digital Output

BD and HD DVD discs may include three audio streams.

  • Primary Audio: Main audio sound track of the disc
  • Secondary Audio: Provides audio for the PIP window of an HD DVD
  • Effect Audio: You will hear a sound every time an item is selected in a BD/HD DVD menu.

PCM: Select this when your equipment (Home theater or Receiver) does not decode Dolby Digital. Primary, Secondary and Effect audio is possible.

Bitstream(Re-encode): Re-encodes the Primary, Secondary and Effect audio streams for DTS.

Bitstream(Audiophile): Provides a higher level of audio quality when watching a disc. Only Primary audio (main movie soundtrack) will be heard.

  • If you have selected a LPCM sound track on a disc, the output will automatically be set to PCM.
  • Be sure to select the correct Digital Output or you will hear no sound or a loud noise.
  • When playing a Dolby Digital movie make sure the Digital Output is set to Bitstream.
  • If the HDMI device (Receiver, TV) is not compatible with compressed formats (Dolby digital, DTS), the audio signal outputs as PCM.
  • Secondary and Effect audio will not be heard with regular DVDs.
  • Some BD and HD DVD discs do not have Secondary and Effect audio.

IMPORTANT: When using the TV's audio via the HDMI input, this setting also applies based on whether the TV supports Dolby Digital, MPEG-2, or DTS audio.

PCM Downsampling

In the Audio Setup menu, set PCM Downsampling to On if your system does not support 96KHz signals. This will convert the 96KHz signals fo 48KHz.

If your system does support 96KHz signals, set PCM Downsampling to Off.
