The V-Chip feature allows you to set rating restrictions for television programs. One you set the code you will prevent content above your designated limit to be blocked. These ratings will be displayed before a show usually in the lower left had corner for example:

Television ratings are as follows: TV-Y, TV-Y7, TV-Y7-FV, TV-G, TV-PG, TV-14, and TV-MA. Click here to  vist the FCC's website for more information on these ratings.

The V-Chip rating system can only be used when you are using the TV's internal tuner to decode broadcasts. If you are using a cable or satellite box you will not be able to use the V-Chip feature.

 

TV-Y - General audience, suitable for all ages.

TV-Y7 - Directed towards older children aged 7 and up, may contain mild violence.

TV-Y7-FV - Directed towards older children aged 7 and up, may contain fantasy violence.

TV-G - Suitable for general audiences, may contain infrequent coarse language and limited violence.

TV-PG - Parental guidance suggested, may contain more frequent coarse language, sexual situations, or violence.

TV-14 - Parents strongly cautioned, may contain intense violence, explicit sexual dialogue, or intensely suggestive situations.

TV-MA - Mature audiences only, may contain graphic violence, explicit sexual activity, or crude indecent language.

 

Note: The V-Chip rating system can only be used when you are using the TV's internal tuner to decode broadcasts. If you are using a cable or satellite box, you will not be able to use the V-Chip feature.

 

Terms:

 

V-Chip - A feature that allows parents to block television programming based on its rating.

Rating Restrictions - Limits set by parents on the types of programming their child can watch.

Internal Tuner - A device built into the TV that receives and decodes broadcast signals.

Cable Box / Satellite Box - Devices provided by cable or satellite companies to receive and decode their signals.
