Question:

How to fix the "Mode Not Supported" message on my TV?

Answer:

If you have any device connected to the TV be sure the box is outputting a resolution that your TV supports. Your TV supports these resolutions through HDMI:

  • 480i (640 x 480 interlaced)
  • 480p (640 x 480 progressive)
  • 720p (1280 x 720 progressive)
  • 1080i (1920 x 1080 interlaced)
  • 1080p (1920 x 1080 progressive)

After you have confirmed the resolution coming from your HDMI source is a supported format try the following to remove the "Mode Not Supported" Message.

Action

Explanation

Set external device to a fixed output resolution

Many devices will have the ability to switch resolutions based on the incoming signal. By setting the resolution output to a fixed output can resolved any time out issues that could result in the "Mode Not Supported" message.

Test with a 6ft or shorter cable

Long HDMI cables can sometime cause an issue resulting in a "Mode Not Supported" message. If a cable longer that 12ft is needed be sure to use an ISF® rated cable.

"Handshake" test. Try turning off the TV and external HDMI device.

  • Turn on the TV, wait 15 seconds and then turn on the HDMI device.
  • Turn on external HDMI device, wait 15 seconds and then turn on the TV.

By turning on the first device and then waiting to turn on the second device will test the HDMI "Handshake" that occurs between the two devices and confirms it is being performed properly.

If available disable the BD Wise feature

As the TV tries to communicate with the external device timeout issues could occur. Disabling the BD Wise feature can prevent this.

Test with a second HDMI device that supports the same resolution.

If the TV is able to function with a secondary HDMI device at the same resolution, this is an indication that the TV is not the source of the problem but the signal being sent from the original device.

Factory reset the TV

Performing a factory reset on the TV can clear up any glitches in the system that may be causing this issue.

Update firmware if available

Updating the firmware on the TV will reinstall the TV's operating system and return all settings to factory defaults. This will clear ay system issues in the TV.
