Washer Is Not Starting Properly

PROBLEM 1:

Machine Does Not Start At All

SOLUTION 1:

If your washer is not starting, please follow these steps:

  • Check if the washer is plugged in.
  • Make sure the door is firmly closed.
  • Make sure Child Lock is not activated.
  • Check the fuse or reset the circuit breaker.
  • If the washer makes clicking noises to check the door lock, do a quick drain and try again.
  • Make sure water source faucets are open.

If the issue still persists, then the washers requires service.

PROBLEM 2:

Machine Does Not Start Immediately or Takes a Long Time to Start

SOLUTION 2:

This Is Normal

If your washing machine isn't starting right away after you press Start, there is no need for concern. It is normal if the machine does not immediately start the cycle. However, if the washer is taking an excessively long time to wash clothes, it may be due to the washer being unbalanced.

Below is the regular procedure for washing machines and why the actual cycle may not start right away:

  • After you press Start, you will hear a "click" noise. The washer is locking the door in preparation for the start of the cycle.

  • Next, you may hear a whirring or low humming noise. The machine's drain pump activates to ensure that no residual water from a previous cycle is left in the drum.

    • If the unit is not filling and the buzzing/humming sound is very loud, it means there is not enough water being supplied to the washer.

  • The drum will then spin slowly in one direction for several seconds and then stop. Next, it will spin slowly in the opposite direction for several seconds and then stop again. It will repeat this process a few more times. This is weight sensing. The machine is determining the size of the load and how much water to add for the initial fill. This process will take about 2 minutes.

    • However, if the load is unbalanced or overloaded, the weight sensing may continue for 15 - 20 minutes. The following could also occur: the washer will spin slowly for the duration of the cycle, OR the washer will stop or display an error code (probably the "DC" error code).

    • If you are experiencing this, make sure the washer is level and not overloaded.

  • After weight sensing is completed, the machine will begin filling with water. Depending on what model you have or how many items are in the drum, you may or may not be able to see water filling the drum.

  • When the machine detects the correct level of water, the machine will then begin the selected cycle.

Important: Weight sensing is a function that works on Heavy Duty and Normal wash cycles; it is not activated for Delicate or Permanent Press cycles.
