Question:

What are the main causes of mold and odor in a washing machine and how can it be prevented?

Answer:

The main reasons that can cause mold and unpleasant smells in a washing machine include germs and dirt accumulating in the drain filter, on the back of the tub/drum, in the drain pump after a long period of time, on the door boot, due to poor air circulation when the door remains closed, and from excess detergent being used and leftover inside. To prevent mold and odors, regularly use the Self-clean/Self-clean+ cycle (explained as a special cleaning program for the washing machine) once a month and maintain the rubber boot (a flexible seal around the door).

Terms:

  • Mold - a type of fungus that can grow in damp places and creates an unpleasant musty smell (like bread gone bad)
  • Odor - an unpleasant smell
  • Bad Smell - a strong, unpleasant odor
  • Drain Filter - a part in the washing machine that catches dirt and hair to prevent it from clogging the pipes
  • Tub/Drum - the large container in the washing machine where clothes are washed
  • Door Boot - the rubber part around the door that creates a seal to hold water inside the washing machine
  • Air Circulation - the movement of air within a space, which helps to keep things fresh and dry

*DO NOT set up service as this is a Maintnance issue.
