Using Sabbath mode on your refrigerator

Question:

How does Sabbath mode work on my refrigerator?

Answer:

Sabbath mode adjusts your refrigerator so it meets the requirements of certain religious laws for holidays and days of rest. This mode prevents the appliance's panel and lights from responding to input in any way, either from pressing buttons or opening the door.

Note: Not all models have Sabbath mode. If your user manual does not mention it, then your model does not have it.

When the refrigerator is in Sabbath mode, the buttons, the display, and the internal lights do not function. The refrigerator and freezer, however, continue to cool. This is based on the Kosher certification requirements. Sabbath mode stays active for 85 hours once it is enabled, even if there is a power outage.

If your model has an Automatic Control Lock, you will need to unlock it first. Touch and hold the appropriate button combination from the following list (or consult your user manual) for 5 seconds until the lights go out or come back on.

Depending on what model you have, here are the possible button combinations:

  • Door Alarm and Water/Ice.
  • Freezer and Door Alarm.
  • Power Freeze and Power Cool.
  • The O and > buttons. Then, tap the > button.

Models which have both Sabbath mode and SmartThings can turn Sabbath mode on or off in the SmartThings app. To do so, open the SmartThings app, then navigate to and select your refrigerator, and then tap Refrigerator options. Tap Sabbath mode.
