How To Connect A Video Game System

This section explains how to connect video game systems to your television.

Most video game systems come with the cables required for connecting them to your TV.

Note: Many game systems also have their own proprietary connections on one end of these cables.

If your video game system has a proprietary connection then you must use the cables that came with the system or compatible cables for your system.

The instructions in this section are arranged by the type of connection available on your TV.

 

Composite AV

To connect a video game system to your TV with Composite A/V cables, follow these steps: 

  1. Connect one end of the Composite video (yellow) and audio (red and white) cables to the video game system. This will usually be the proprietary connection end that connects to your game system.
  2. Note: The end that connects to your game system is usually the proprietary end.

  1. Connect the composite video (yellow) cable to the green video input with the yellow ring around it on your TV. Connect the audio (red and white) cables to the audio AV IN jacks on your TV. See the illustration below.

    Note: The AV Video In on your TV shares a connection with the Component input. The green input labeled Y also has a yellow ring around it, identifying it as the Composite Video In connection. The connection jacks on the TV will be facing down.

  1. Press the SOURCE button on the TV's remote until you are on AV.

 

Component AV

To connect a video game system to your TV with Component A/V cables, follow these steps below: 

  1. Connect one end of the Component video (green, blue, and red) and audio (red and white) cables to the COMPONENT OUT on your video game system. This is usually be the end with the proprietary connection that connects to the video game system
  2. Connect the other end of the Component video (green, blue, and red) and audio (red and white) cables to the COMPONENT IN on the TV. See the illustration below.
  3. Note: The connection jacks on the TV will be facing down.

  1. Press the SOURCE button on the TV's remote and select the COMPONENT source.

 

HDMI

To connect a video game system to your TV with an HDMI cable, follow these steps: 

  1. Connect the HDMI cable from the HDMI OUT jack on your video game system to any free HDMI input on your TV.
  1. Press the SOURCE button on the TV remote until you are on the choosen HDMI connection you chose in Step 1.

 

VGA

To connect a video game system to your TV with a VGA cable, follow these steps: 

  1. Connect the VGA cable from the VGA OUT on the player to the PC IN on the TV. The end of the cable that connects to the video game sysem is usually be a proprietary connection.
  2. Connect the audio (3.5mm mini-jack) cable from the VGA AUDIO OUT on the video game system to the PC AUDIO IN on the TV.

    Note: If your player has red and white audio jacks for the VGA output, then you need an RCA-to-mini-jack adapter to make the audio connection. RCA-to-mini-jack adapters are available at most electronics stores.
  3. Press the SOURCE button on the TV's remote until you are on PC.
