To troubleshoot if your TV is connected to an HD cable or satellite box, follow these steps: 

  1. Determine if the audio is leading or following the picture. Leading means that you hear the audio before the lips move. Following means the lips move before you hear the audio.
  2. Try different channels. If the audio is in sync on other channels, then there could be a broadcasting issue with the original channel or program.
    • If the audio is not in sync on the other channels, test additional HD and SD channels.
    • If the audio is out of sync on all other channels, then there could be an equipment or cabling problem.

    If your audio is leading, go to Step 3. If the audio is following, go to Step 4.

  3. If the audio is leading the picture, consult the user manual of your home theater or stereo to find out how to change the millisecond delay time and correct the audio sync. If you cannot correct the audio sync using this feature, go to Step 4.
  4. Test the audio from your TV speakers.
    • If the audio is in sync when you play it through the TV speakers, the broadcast signal is good and there is either a delay from the set top box to the home theater or a delay in processing the incoming signal.
    • If you are not using the digital audio out on your set top box, try connecting this output to the digital audio input on your home theater or stereo system. Digital audio transfers the audio signal faster than analog and may eliminate your audio sync issue.
    • The sync issue could also be caused by faulty wiring or an overly long audio cable run: For example, if you have an audio connection run from the set top box to the home theater of 20 feet and a video connection run of only 3 feet. Try moving equipment closer together or using shorter audio cables. If you can’t decrease the length of the run, try wire with low loss and quick response designed for long runs.
