Question:

What are the limitations on selecting Dolby Digital as the SPDIF Output audio format on my TV?

Answer:

The SPDIF Output allows you to choose between PCM or Dolby Digital audio formats for sound output from your TV. However, there are certain conditions when selecting Dolby Digital as the audio format is restricted. It can only be chosen when the TV is decoding the Dolby Digital signal. This occurs in two scenarios:

When the TV is tuned to an ATSC (digital over-the-air) or QAM (cable) channel that carries the Dolby Digital track.

When the TV is accessing a streaming service, such as Amazon Video On Demand, Vudu, or Hulu, which features a Dolby Digital track.

Note: Dolby Digital option will not be available for audio signals received through HDMI sources, as the TV does not decode those signals.
