Question:

What should I do if my LED TV screen appears cloudy when displaying black or dark colors?

Answer:

Customers may call in and complain that the screens on their LED TVs have a cloudy appearance in areas where the screens are displaying very dark colors or black.  Black is one of the hardest colors to produce, when the television attempts to display a black or dark screen, if there are any imperfections in the panel, the imperfections appear as an unevenness in lighting that makes the screen look cloudy.

Here is an example of what a cloudy screen looks like compared to a pure black screen:

The immediate cause of clouding is heat inside the TV. Also, over time, the areas of heat build-up can change and, as a result, the cloudiness can move around the screen. See the examples below:

To decrease or eliminate clouding on the LED TV screen

Have the customer try:

  • Set the TV to the Standard or Movie picture mode.
  • Have the customer lower the backlight on their TV to 7.
  • Tell customers to make sure their set is well ventilated.

If the customer demands that the TV be serviced and has not tried the recommendations above we cannot service the set. Have the customer test with the above recommendations for a week and if the clouding is still apparent set the tV up for service.
