The Resolution at which the Media is Recorded

Question:

Why do Standard DVDs look worse compared to HD DVDs or Blu-Ray discs? What equipment do I need to achieve high definition quality on my TV?

Answer:

Standard DVDs appear less sharp because they are recorded at Enhanced Definition (480p), whereas High Definition TVs require either 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolutions. To enjoy true HD quality, you'll need a Blu-Ray player paired with Blu-Ray discs or an HD-DVD player with HD-DVD discs. Note that up-converting DVD players aren't genuine HD devices; they can only play standard DVDs despite their capability to adjust resolution settings. Additionally, the TV usually scales images better than the DVD player.
