Vibration And Noise From The Dryer

PROBLEMS COVERED

  1. Rattling Noise
  2. Thumping Noise
  3. Squealing, Squeaking, or Grinding Noise
  4. Excessive Vibration or Humming Noise
  5. Strange Noise From Gas Dryer

Samsung dryers are generally very quiet. See the section below most similar to the noise the dryer is making.

PROBLEM 1:

Rattling Noise

SOLUTION 1:

If you hear a rattling noise, please perform the following:

  • Make sure the dryer is level. Using a carpenter's level, check if the top of the dryer is level front, back, left, and right.

  • If the dryer was recently installed and the vent position was adjusted during installation, check all vents for proper alignment and make sure all hardware is secure.

    • Please refer to the side vent installation kit for instructions.

  • Check if the dryer or the vent is touching any other object that could be causing the noise. The dryer vent hose or the electrical cord may be rattling against each other or against the dryer.

  • Check the drum for loose objects such as buttons from a shirt or jeans, pens, coins, etc.

If the above steps have been performed and the rattling noise continues, the dryer
will require service.

PROBLEM 2:

Thumping Noise

SOLUTION 1:

A thumping noise that occurs during a drying cycle is usually caused by an item in the drum. Good examples are snaps, zippers, buttons, change, or other heavy objects within the dryer.

To prevent this noise, check all of your pant or jacket pockets before starting a load. You can also turn items with large or oversized buttons, snaps, or zippers inside out.

If the noise occurs while the dryer is empty, then the
dryer will require service.

PROBLEM 3:

Squealing, Squeaking, or Grinding Noise

SOLUTION 1:

This type of noise is caused by the belt inside the dryer. If the drum is overloaded, the weight may cause the belt to make a loud noise as the drum spins.

If this noise occurs, please perform the following:

  • Immediately stop the cycle and reduce the weight of the load.

  • Run the items through the spin cycle on the washer before putting them in the dryer to remove excess water and reduce weight.

*If a squealing, squeaking, or grinding noise occurs when the dryer has a normal-weight load, is underloaded, or is empty, then the
dryer will require service.

PROBLEM 4:

Excessive Vibration or Humming Noise

SOLUTION 1:

A humming sound is completely normal. The source of the sound is the blower motor pulling air out of the dryer.

On the other hand, excessive vibration can be caused by a number of things. Most of the time, it happens when the dryer isn't properly leveled. For steps on how to properly level the dryer, please see our guide about leveling the dryer.

If the dryer is level but is still vibrating excessively,
please perform the following:

  • Make sure there is nothing touching the dryer (i.e., the washer or any other objects).

  • Check if the exhaust hose is coming into contact with any other objects.

  • Verify that the dryer isn't overloaded or underloaded.

PROBLEM 5:

Strange Noise From Gas Dryer

SOLUTION 1:

If you have a gas dryer and hear a buzzing sound some time during cycles, the sound is probably coming from the gas valve solenoid. The solenoid (seen below) is what provides gas to the burner in gas dryers.

As long as the buzzing sound is not constant for the duration of the cycle, then this is normal.
