Question:

What is RS-232 and how does it work on Samsung TVs? Can Samsung provide support for its installation and setup?

Answer:

Subject:  RS-232 on Samsung TV's

  • RS-232 is an advanced and specialized form of installation that allows the TV to be controlled through a cable connected directly to the TV.
  • Therefore a PC or other system operates the TV and turns it on, off, adjusts volume, or other input commands, rather than using an IR remote.
  • Only professional installers have access to this method of installation.
  • Samsung TVs can accept RS-232 commands through the USB port on the TV using a special dongle that is only available to custom installers.
  • Older TV models may have an Ex-Link port on the back that can also be used for RS-232 commands.
  • In addition, settings must be changed in the service menu to enable the conversion from USB to RS-232.
  • The service menu should only be accessed by professional installers.
  • Samsung cannot offer phone support for these types of installations.
  • We have a compiled list of RS-232 commands and a PowerPoint presentation of basic instructions for Samsung TVs available for download.
  • We can provide the commands but cannot offer assistance with setup.
