Question

How to remove hard-water buildup?

Answer

What is hard water?

Hard water contains a high amount of minerals like calcium and magnesium that build up over time and leave a scaly residue. Most homes in Canada have hard water. Even though you have an amazing Samsung appliance, the white grime can still accumulate. In a washing machine, it can build up on the drum and choke the filters; it can also build on the inside of a dishwasher and cause clogs. In both cases, your items will not come out as clean. Maybe you did not care about dirty clothes or dishes as a kid, but you care now.

The best way to prevent hard water buildup is to buy a water softener or a whole home filter. With one of these, you will have soft water throughout your whole house.

To clean the dishwasher:

  1. Remove items from the dishwasher.
  2. Take a cup and pour vinegar into it.
  3. Place the cup on the bottom rack of the dishwasher.
  4. Close the door and start the dishwasher's normal cycle. The water will mix with the vinegar and spread it around the inside.
  5. Let the dishwasher air out after the cycle is complete.
  6. Take an old toothbrush and scrub off any remaining residue.
  7. Run the empty dishwasher one more time with regular water and no detergent to remove any leftover vinegar.
